Coltan
Coltan is a metallic ore that in appearance is a dull black mineral. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) holds 80% of the world known reserves. This mineral is used primarily for the production of capacitors, which are vital components in electronic devices, such as mobile phones and laptop computers. The rise in these and similar products over the past decade has resulted in extraordinary demands and price increases for the mineral. These price increases have contributed to tension in the producing countries, particularly between Congo and Rwanda. It has resulted in an ethical problem concerning importing coltan from DRC, but who says western nations have ethics?
