Theodore Kaczynski
Jenn93 recommended the UNABOMBER Manifesto (or Industrial Society and its Future by Theodore Kaczynski) to me in the comment s/he made to my "Age of (t)Reason" post. I have known about this piece of writing for a long time, but somehow it has slipped my mind and now, thanks to the reminder I got, I have finally read it. Although I agree, and disagree, there is one thing that sticks out because it's both true and funny:"The conservatives are fools: They whine about the decay of traditional values, yet they enthusiastically support technological progress and economic growth. Apparently it never occurs to them that you can't make rapid, drastic changes in the technology and the economy of a society with out causing rapid changes in all other aspects of the society as well, and that such rapid changes inevitably break down traditional values."

Aside from the fact that blowing things up for change kills people who are debatably only guilty of trying to support themselves and their kids, it's terribly inefective as a means to change anything. Capitalism is like a dynamic, living web. If one part of the web is destroyed, the other parts will come together to repair it. Many tell me that I have no right to complain living in Canada. The way I see it, if you are inslaved and imprisoned and are well fed, entertained, never beaten and otherwise treated fairly while your cell mates are starved and tortured, you still have a right to complain as you are still a slave. This is a huge problem that I feel helpless to solve.
I know exactly what you mean. What right do people have to say that there is nothing to complain about if my (and your) life is compared to that of a person in Rwanda? Bollocks! Why be content? Why settle for less than more? Kaczynski is right in that a Revolution is more effective than a Reform. The problem is that EVERYONE has got to join in on a revolution of the mind. This will happen, is happening, more and more every day as the old are dying and the young are born. Trust me... the times are a-changing and many of the Baby Boomers and those born even earlier will not like the New World Order of FREEDOM! There is always resistence with death, but like the phoenix, out of death a new and better world will arise!
It's even greater to examine society from a position within it. That is the real challenge; to question all you stand on and live inside while you are there. Although I understand why he went to nature. There is more logic there...
